Getting help

When the question cannot wait.

Keep the phone numbers for the person treating you and your pharmacist. Ask what problems to watch for and whom to reach before treatment begins.

To begin

Severe symptoms need urgent help

A severe allergy can put a life at risk within seconds or minutes.

Signs include trouble breathing, a swollen tongue, or passing out.

MedlinePlus, the government’s patient health site, advises dialing 911 or seeking help at the closest emergency room for severe signs.

If the label or amount is unclear

Semaglutide is an ingredient in medicines for blood sugar or weight.

The US drug agency is the Food and Drug Administration, known here as FDA. FDA has had reports of mistakes with the amount used in semaglutide shots made by a pharmacy; these are called compounded medicines.

Some reports involved hospital care.

Ask the person prescribing it or your pharmacist to explain unclear measuring instructions before use.

If you have already made a medicine mistake, call Poison Control at 1‑800‑222‑1222. MedlinePlus gives this number for help after an overdose.

Ask the pharmacist what to do with a damaged package or one whose storage is in doubt.

Report a medicine problem

MedWatch is FDA’s service for reports of medicine problems.

Patients can file a report themselves. There is no fee.

Open the FDA’s patient reporting form

By itself, a report is not proof that the medicine led to the problem.

Use the right California complaint route

For a medical doctor, use California’s Medical Board complaint form.

For a nurse or pharmacy, use that profession’s state board. A physician assistant is a licensed medical worker supervised by a doctor; complaints about assistants go to their own state board.

The pharmacy board does not handle ordinary medicine-price or insurance-billing disputes.

For business problems such as misleading ads or refund concerns, California’s Attorney General accepts consumer complaints.

Chapter recap

Keep this in mind.

Put the care team’s contact route with your treatment notes. For severe allergic symptoms, use emergency help.
